Holmes earned his Bachelor's degree from Emory University and his Master's degree from Columbia University in journalism. He started his career as a journalist, working for newspapers such as the Atlanta Journal and the New York Herald Tribune.

During World War II, Holmes served in the army and worked as a war correspondent. He received a Purple Heart for his bravery in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he became a professor of journalism at the University of Georgia and wrote several books on journalism and writing.

Holmes was also a passionate advocate for civil rights. He supported the desegregation of schools and was involved in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

He passed away on July 31, 1962, in Athens, Georgia at the age of 58.
